“Yes, we can do better than capitalism.”

Prof. Richard D. Wolff published an article in commondreams.org in 2019. I speak on Wolff quite a bit as he is the U.S.’s most prominent Marxian economist. In this article, Wolff explains how bringing democracy to the workplace can combat the exploitation of capitalism. It’s worth a read for anyone that wants to understand the different types of “socialism,” or anyone that is interested in socialism that has NOTHING to do with the government.

CEO of Whole Foods calls socialism “trickle-up poverty.”

John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, claimed socialism is “the path to poverty.” This is interesting considering that China, a socialist-state, has lifted 800 million people out of poverty. China and the former Soviet Union were semi-feudal states prior to their respective revolutions. In Russia, poverty and depravation was so extreme the life-expectancy was below 40 prior to the Bolsheviks coming to power. The notion that the working class is worse off under socialism is purely opinion, and when its the opinion of a wealthy CEO- you should be skeptical.

America’s Most Prominent Marxian Economist Debates David D. Friedman

Another Proff. Wolff debate. In this debate Wolff challenges the son of prominent libertarian economist Milton Friedman, David D. Friedman. This was such a pleasure to watch as both parties were clear and cordial. The format for the debate allows for this to be educational to the viewer as possible.

“Why Socialism” by Albert Einstein

In May of 1948, the Monthly Review’s first issue featured an op-ed by none other than renowned physicist Albert Einstein. In his article, Einstein defended socialism and elaborated upon his beliefs. Einstein was such a comrade that he once referred to Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheveiks, as a “guardian and restorer of humanity.” Einstein also said “I honor Lenin as a man who completely sacrificed himself and devoted all his energy to the realization of social justice.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez clarifies: No, not all socialists are Democrats

Red-Scare tactics have reached an all-time high in the buildup to the 2020 Election. Oddly enough, non-socialist Democrats have been the targets; Joe Biden has been called a “radical Marxist,” for example. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had to clarify that socialists are not exclusively Democrats. It’s true, in fact most are not Democrats at all. While public opinion polling shows an appeal to socialism rising in the Democratic Party, most socialists would find the notion that they are Democratic Party members detestable.

Pope Francis Declares Capitalism a Failure in the Pandemic

Pope Francis specifically attacked the trickle-down theory (an economic theory of wealth literally trickling down from the rich to the poor and middle class). Pope Francis went as far as to accuse neoliberals as having a dogmatic faith.

“The marketplace by itself cannot resolve every problem, however much we are asked to believe this dogma of neoliberal faith,” he said.

Pope Francis alluded to something that can be found in high prevalence in Marxist theory, that inequality breeds societal problems and violence.

Capitalism v.s. Socialism: A Soho Forum Debate

Professor Richard D. Wolff, author of books such as “Understanding Marxism” and “Democracy at Work” debated Reason magazine’s Jean Epstein on capitalism v.s. socialism. This debate is of significance due to Wolff’s profile as the leading Marxian economist in the United States. In every regard, Wolff knows his stuff. This debate is a fantastic watch for anyone that wishes to keep an open mind towards left-leaning thought as Wolff absolutely crushed this debate. Wolff spoke at length on the Soviet Union and China, democracy in the workplace, democratizing the economy, and potential changes that could be made for the future. Wolff also provides one of the most damning characterizations capitalism found on Youtube. To summarize, “Capitalism is fundamentally un-Democratic.”

2019 Poll Finds 70% of Millenials are Likely to Vote for a Socialist

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, which began by act of Congress not long after the fall of Communism in the old Eastern Bloc, runs annual polls in the United States. The organization’s purpose is to, essentially, spread awareness about the crimes committed by “Communism.” The organization’s 2019 polls raised alarms, as 70% of millenials acknowledged being open to supporting a socialist candidate- nearly 40% viewed communism favorably. The aims of the foundation are likely going to be moot moving forward- millenials are not under-educated about the “horrors of socialism,” they just know the status quo is not working for them.

Democratic Socialists of America

The Democratic Socialists of America are a non-profit political organization with high-profile members such as Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The aims of the political organization are to influence electoral politics within the Democratic Party towards the Left. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the organization has grown its membership nationally to 100,000.

The Democratic Socialists of America is a phenomenal organization to join for those looking for a more egalitarian answer to modern issues. It also hosts many local events to supply a variety of charitable work and aid to underprivileged communities. The DSA has many high-profile members, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The founder of the DSA was lifelong socialist Michael Harrington.
